Recreation Management Courses Offer Theory and Practical Application
Did you know that to apply to Centennial College's recreation management courses within the Recreation and Leisure Services program, all you need is: at minimum an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent or be 19 years of age or older; the compulsory English 12C or U or skills assessment, or equivalent. Although it is not a requirement, volunteer work in a related field is recommended prior to application. Additionally, attending a program admission session is highly recommended.
Once accepted, students attend recreation management courses whose goals it is to teach students how to improve the quality of life for all citizens by producing healthy communities. As such, courses focus on developing critical practical skills through integration of classroom learning into real life situations by focusing on: programming, communication and group skills, community development, life span development, diversity and recreation management. Among specific recreation management courses are: Child and Youth Development, Group Dynamics, Gerontology and Wellness, Health Lifestyle Management, Advanced Computer Applications, Recreation Management and Marketing, and more.
To apply what they have learned in their recreation management courses, students attend two supervised field placements in the second semester (two days a week) and the third and fourth semesters (three days a week). During this time, students work alongside seasoned professionals becoming comfortable with a variety of situations prior to graduation.
Once their recreation management courses are completed, students have the ability to: create, plan, implement and evaluate recreation and leisure programs and special events; apply the principles of marketing to the promotion of the benefits of recreation and leisure programs, special events, services and facilities; generate revenue for recreation and leisure programs, special events, services and facilities; contribute to strategies for effectively managing the performance and development of staff and volunteers in recreation and leisure settings; contribute to the safe and effective management of recreation venues; design and implement appropriate research and planning strategies; educate others regarding the value and benefits of recreation, leisure and lifestyle enhancement; apply community development strategies for advocating and facilitating the personal, social, economic and environmental benefits of recreation; develop plans for ongoing personal and professional growth and development and more.
With this wide range of skills, recreation management degree graduates have many roles such as leaders, teachers, group facilitators, advocates, referral workers, counsellors, outreach workers or coaches. Particular companies that have hired Centennial College grads include: Ajax Recreation and Culture Department, Bridgepoint Health, Centre for Addictions and Mental Health, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, Markham Recreation and Culture Services and Variety Village.
Alternatively, should qualified students want to expand their knowledge past recreation management courses at Centennial College, they are able to participate in an articulated program with selected universities, institutes and professional associations. These partnerships allow graduates to apply academic credit towards further study and include: Brock University, Recreation and Leisure Studies degree (degree studies can be completed in just two additional years) as well as Athabasca University (60 credits can be received toward a 120-credit Bachelor of Professional Arts degree - Human Service major).
